HpH Twin Shark cruising to the next cumulus cloud

In the first article, I spoke about the power of Communication and how clarity and connection shape every moment of our flying experience. In the second of this five-part series, we now dive into Trust: the invisible lift beneath every wing. Trust is the natural extension of strong communication and the heartbeat of safe, confident flying. This article explores how trust transforms teams, anchors decision-making, and elevates us as pilots and people alike.

Trust is what keeps us steady in the air and grounded in our purpose. In gliding, trust takes many forms: trusting your teammates, your aircraft, your instruments, and, perhaps most importantly, yourself.

When you hook on the wire to launch, or rack it into a thermal, you’re placing trust in the work and judgment of others. The winch operator’s timing, the instructor’s guidance, and the maintenance team’s precision & attention to detail all play a role in your safety and success. But trust isn’t given, it’s earned. It grows through consistency, communication, and shared experience amongst one another.

Equally, self-trust is essential. Every glider pilot faces moments of uncertainty, turbulent air, fading lift, or the challenge of an out-landing that is imminent. In these moments, trusting your training and instincts makes the difference between fear and focus. You’ve prepared for this. You know what to do.

Trust also flows upward: from the team to its leaders! When leaders make decisions transparently and model accountability, they build an atmosphere where everyone feels secure and valued.

In gliding, trust is the ‘invisible lift’ that lets us climb higher, both in skill and in spirit. It reminds us that we are never alone up there. We fly together, supported by a network of people who care, commit, and believe in one another. And when that trust is strong, there’s no limit to how high we can soar.

Soar invisibly high,
Adam Woolley
