In many European gliders the compass is a required instrument, also in power planes they are required. A compass works by aligning itself with the geomagnetic field of the earth. Great care must be taken when choosing the compass location. Deviation errors can occur when installed too close to other magnetized components in the aircraft. Errors will also be found in turns and only accurate in un-accelerated or decelerated flight.
