I spent the day with a student from MN and he got to experience some wave, it was small and we only climbed about 700 ft above release, but it was better than landing so it was a win, and it was mid-January and we are flying... Most of our day was climb 50 ft lose 30.... it was a slow climb. The average climb rate would be better if we could climb the entire time, so let’s avoid losing 30 ft each time.

It is easiest to think about starting on the upwind side of the line or cylinder. But unless it is really windy my biggest concern is getting the best energy line or strongest thermal. If you are starting a race and your first climb is good you are better off mentally. Even if someone took a slightly better start upwind, you mentally are better off with a strong climb. Imagine the pilot just upwind

For all of you following Adam Wolley's Gliding Adventures. He had a video after Day 1 at the Australian Multiclass Nationals. Interviewing Peter Temple the day 1 winner. Peter mentions his strategy to align his legs into and down wind. With a 12 kph faster speed, I think he made it work.

Team flying is an art and it takes a lot of practice to be good at it. I have attempted team flying at three World Gliding Championships and one Junior World Gliding Championships. I remember one day at the Juniors I was able to share some information on the cloudstreet I was running down and getting slow and recommending for my teammate to do something else. He did and won the day.
