It’s like a fishing story; it was this big… There I was at 200ft, or whatever someone claims to have been. First of all, most of the low saves were not as low as someone claimed, and it gets lower with each telling of the story. Answer: We safely land out.
Going cross-country can be intimidating, scary, and intense. But it should be safe; if not, you are doing it wrong. Of course, you must have enough experience before attempting it. I am not talking to my newly soloed students here, but those who are competent at thermalling, finding lift, and spot landing.

A soft release when performed on a Schweitzer hook prevents the release arm from slamming into the stop. It also puts less wear on the latch on both the male and female sides. It also keeps the rope from tying itself into a huge knot. The knot gets dragged on the runway and quickly wears it out as it’s now has a single point dragging across the pavement.
