Aero Club in Zbraslavice CZ

With Communication and Trust now firmly established in the first two articles, we move into the third instalment of my Core Values: Care. Just as trust builds strength, care builds unity. This part of the series focuses on the human side of gliding: the compassion, empathy, and respect that turn a group of pilots into a true community. Care is where technical excellence meets emotional intelligence, and together they create an environment where everyone thrives.

Essentially, care is what turns a group of pilots into a family. It’s the quiet act of helping someone rig their glider on a windy day, the patience shown to a student struggling through their first take-offs, or the respect shown toward the environment on which we depend.

When you care, I mean, truly care, your actions will speak louder than words. You inspect your aircraft not because you have to, but because you respect your sailplane, towplane, or winch. You check in with a teammate not because it’s expected, but because you value their safety and overall well-being. Care transforms a good club or team into a great one!

In training sessions, care means looking beyond just yourself. It’s recognizing when a fellow pilot needs a word of encouragement, or when a ground crew member deserves a “thank you.” It’s the awareness that we’re all part of something that only works when everyone feels supported.

Care also extends to the sky itself, to the landscapes, the airfields, and the weather systems that make our sport possible. When we care for our environment, the equipment, and each other, we preserve the gift of flight for future generations.

At its core, care is leadership. It’s setting an example so that compassion and excellence can coexist. A caring pilot is not just a better pilot; they’re a better teammate, a better mentor, and even a steward of the sport. Care keeps our community strong, our operations safe, and our hearts connected to the joy of flight.

Safe circles,
Adam Woolley
