Great Communication: The Pilot’s Most Essential Tool
Welcome to the first installment of my five-part series on ‘Core Values’ in the gliding environment. I’d like to start with Communication, the foundation upon which every safe flight, successful launch, and effective team interaction is built upon. Before we explore the deeper layers of teamwork and personal excellence, we start here, because great communication is the spark that ignites trust, care, responsibility, and pride!
In gliding, communication isn’t just about talking; it’s about connecting. Every successful launch procedure, every safe arrival and landing, and every shared flight experience begins and ends with clear, honest communication. When we communicate well, we build understanding: when we don’t, we invite risk.
Think about the rhythm of how a launch goes: the signals between the wing runner, the winch driver, and the pilot all align like choreography. A single miscue could change the story of the flight. The same holds true in how we brief before take-off, or the debrief afterwards. When we speak openly and listen actively, we help one another grow. This is also known as hangar talk, which professional pilots do on a daily basis, to learn from one another.
Great communication isn’t limited to radios and checklists. It’s also the quiet conversations before the day begins, the feedback offered after a flight, and the encouragement shared with someone still finding their confidence. True communication creates trust and respect; it tells your teammates, “I value what you bring to this airfield or to this flight.”
In training, communication transforms mistakes into lessons. It builds awareness of what’s happening in the sky and on the ground. It ensures that every member of your club, from the most experienced instructor to the newest student, feels seen, heard, and part of something larger than themselves.
So, as you prepare for your next flight, remember this: communication is not just a technical skill; it’s the heartbeat of the gliding community as a whole. Speak clearly. Listen intently. Share openly. When we do that, we soar higher together!
Safe circles,
Adam Woolley
