Towing Your Cobra Trailer

Cruising through the middle of the night I heard an odd clanking noise. After a few miles I pulled over to notice the round tongue had broke with less than an inch of metal remained.

Turns out that the round tongue was not strong enough when being towed by a RV. The theory being that the leverage caused by the long arm between the rear axle of the RV and the ball, would bounce the trailer. Topped with some of our roads being less then ideal at freeway speeds, the round tongues fail.

When the tongue broke it pulled on the trailer brake, heating up the bearings. Outside Montgomery Alabama we had to pull over (pictured above, note the wheel separated).

The trailer spent the rest of the contest on blocks while we waited for, then installed parts. I would seriously consider changing over to the square tongue, especially if you are towing with an RV.

With the chain attached to the tongue, not the trailer, it was ready to roam West Texas alone. There is a clamp just inside the trailer that holds the tongue in. Attaching your chain to the bottom of those bolts seems to be a better place. You might need to use a longer bolt and a second nut to hold the chain.
