General Description

Mylar Gap Seal is used to seal the gap in front of a control surface to improve the aerodynamic performance of a sailplane.

A strip of pre-curved Mylar is attached to the upper surface and often the lower surface of the wing, bridging the gap and resting lightly on the control surface. This creates a smooth airflow transition across the hinge line.

Pre-curved Mylar is also commonly used to seal gaps on the elevator and rudder.

Unlike flat Mylar, pre-curved material maintains contact with the control surface when it deflects downward. This allows the seal to remain effective throughout the full range of control movement.

Mylar Gap Seal Tape comes in 15 meter or 25 meter lengths with some wider varieties available per meter. In addition to covering the gap, you must leave room for transfer tape. Please refer to your aircraft maintenance manual. Most aircraft manufacturers specify transfer tape widths between ⅓ and ½ of the Mylar width. To determine the correct Mylar width, add the gap plus the transfer tape width.

Over time, the Mylar may lose its curvature. When the strip becomes flat and no longer maintains contact with the control surface, it should be replaced to maintain proper sealing and performance.  25mm to 38mm .2 mm thick.
