SOTECC Canopy FLasher

SOTECC Canopy Flasher

General Description

SOTECC Canopy Flasher - is an optical collision warning device meant to improve visibility to other air traffic participants in the airspace. Price includes Inbound international shipping, customs and import fees.

Sotecc Canopy Flasher is a special order item. Please allow approximately 4 weeks for delivery.

Proven system - With its five LEDs, the hood flasher is the ideal combination of visibility and efficiency.

The color RED means danger - ...and is quickly perceived by the human eye. It is also a contrast to the mostly white gliders. Our flight tests quickly showed that we will equip the canopy flasher with red CREE® LEDs as standard. This ensures good visibility even on days with strong sunlight.

Protection even from aircraft without collision warning - ...because not every aircraft is equipped with a collision warning device, transponder or similar. The power-saving normal operation combines visibility and low power consumption. And all this fully automatically.

No tangled cables with folding hoods - ...through the newly developed Canopy Contact. * This ensures a safe canopy jettison and provides the power supply. With its unobtrusive, black design, the contact, like the canopy flasher, adapts to the modern glider cockpit.

Features

  • Improved visibility with five powerful red CREE® LEDs
  • Collision warning also for aircraft without FLARM®
  • No impairment of canopy jettison
  • Kit adapted to the aircraft type

* Canopy Contact (for installation in gliders with folding canopies) In the case of folding canopies, it is of fundamental importance that in the event of an emergency jettison, this is not blocked by cables or other connections. That is why SOTECC has invested a lot of time in the development of a hood contact that combines functionality and safety with uncomplicated installation. The package includes a template and easy-to-understand installation instructions with many pictures.

When switching on the avionics of your glider, the canopy flash is armed, but still not flashing and is waiting for your take-off. Once gaining speed on your take-off roll, the canopy flash starts flashing with a battery saving flash frequency. If a potential collision threat is recognized (depending on several parameters), the canopy flash automatically switches into the alarm-mode, the flashes are getting more remarkable and more aggressive. After landing and coming to a full stop, the canopy flash automatically stops flashing and is then again ready and armed for the next flight. All this without increased pilot workload and without any switch. It's as simple as that.

This is a special order item, imported from Germany. Please allow approximately 2-4 weeks for delivery.

Q: What is the difference between Canopy Flasher with ConnectBox and without?:

A: Canopy Flasher with ConnectBOX

Our tried and tested system in combination with FLARM® data analysis, ie the flasher is switched on and off automatically at the start and end of the flight. A quick explanation here: When the plane is on the ground, the canopy flasher stays off. As soon as the aircraft starts to move, this is recognized and the canopy flasher starts to flash automatically with a power-saving flash frequency. This means that the pilot does not have to press the switch in normal operation.

We recommend this system.

An automatic function makes sense because otherwise switching on as well as switching on and off can often be forgotten. And then you may have a speed camera on the plane that doesn't flash...

Canopy flasher without ConnectBOX

Six LEDs in conjunction with LED lenses provide a strong, forward-directed beam of light. After turning on the switch provided for this purpose, the hood flasher starts flashing at a frequency of 0.6 Hz (one flash every 1.5 seconds). This frequency is a compromise between visibility and power consumption. The canopy flasher works purely manually, no collision data from FLARM® devices are evaluated and the frequency is maintained until the pilot switches it off. It should be noted that the canopy flasher must be switched off manually after landing.

Q: I want to install the canopy flasher in my glider, but I have concerns about power consumption.

A: The power consumption is as low as possible and has never been lower ever before due to a new and intelligent control unit and the modern LED technique. The average power consumption of about 100 mA is comparable to a 57mm color display.

Q: I am not technically skilled. Is it difficult to install the canopy flash or especially the canopy contact?

A: We supply very detailed installation instructions, containing several pictures and step-by-step instructions for fast and easy mounting. Two templates help to install the canopy flash and canopy contact on spot and nothing can go wrong.

Q: How long does it take to install the canopy flash?

A: Depending on your type of glider, two, up to three hours overall.

Q: Are there any reflections on the canopy or canopy frame?

A: No, there are no reflections at all.

Q: Are there any other LED colors available?

A: Yes, white LEDs are also available. But we strongly recommend red LED, as the red color stands out much better than white. Red is a true eye-catcher in all weather conditions.

Q: I have a glider, which is not on the comparable type list.

A: Definitely please let us know, if you are interested, even though your glider is not listed. We steadily work on expanding the list.

ConnectBOX

Configurable Control Unit for Automatic Mode

When standing still on the ground, the speed camera remains switched off. As soon as the aircraft starts to move, this is detected and the speed camera automatically starts flashing at a power-saving flash frequency. The pilot, therefore, does not have to operate the control switch in normal operation.

Reducing pilot workload
Less potential for errors thanks to automatic mode
Collision warning also for aircraft without FLARM®
Power-saving normal operation

If an impending collision is detected, the flashing frequency of the hood flasher changes. After landing, the canopy flasher automatically goes into standby mode and stops flashing.

Automatic activation
In the modern glider cockpit there are now countless buttons, switches and displays. That’s why our SOTECC canopy flasher works fully automatically in conjunction with connectBOX. The philosophy behind this is: support instead of extra effort.

When the aircraft is stationary on the ground, the flasher remains switched off. As soon as the aircraft starts moving, this is detected and the flasher automatically starts flashing with a power-saving flash frequency. This means that the pilot does not have to operate the control switch in auto-mode.

German = automatische aktivierung beim start. English = automatic activation at startup

POWER-SAVING CONTINUOUS FLASH
ULs, paragliders and many other aircraft completely without anti-collision systems such as FLARM® participate in air traffic. Our philosophy, on the other hand, is: The canopy flash ALWAYS flashes as soon as in the air.

German = stromsparendes dauerblitzen im flug. English = power-saving continuous flashing in flight.

WARNING MODE FOR IMMINENT COLLISION
In addition, FLARM® data is evaluated and in the event of an imminent collision, the system switches to alarm mode (change in flash frequency and longer and thus more perceptible warning flashes). By the way, if the FLARM® should fail, this is detected by the intelligent control of the canopy flasher and the warning continues with the normal flash frequency.

German = warnmodus bei flarm-warnung oder kollisionsgerahr. English = warning mode for flarm warning or risk of collision.
