PIK 20D “TAZ” Notes
My partners and I have gone over TAZ and come up with a list of equipment, additions & improvements. In no particular order:
The parachute is Para-Phernalia Long Softie manufactured in 01/05. It’s a 24’ steerable canopy, serial number 7722-S. It’s out of pack about a year. It has a wool backpad, an inflatable bladder for back support and a small emergency kit on one of the shoulder straps. More about the chute later.
The trailer is a PIK factory model (I’m not sure if they have someone else build them or not) that was rebuilt when I bought the glider in 1998. The frame was rebuilt, and the joint along the full length on both sides was glassed in which greatly increases the trailer strength. Then the trailer was painted with two part epoxy paint in a mottled finish so it would stand up better to the sun, dirt and weather. The tires and wheels are in good shape (tires like new), and there is a spare tire mounted in the interior of the trailer. The front of the trailer has two drop-down legs to take the weight off of the trailer tongue when it’s parked & also has a fold up swivel wheel on the tongue for easier ground handling. The brakes are hydraulic surge. The trailer also has a small solar panel mounted on top of the front hatch. That along with a small solar controller has been great at keeping the glider battery charged. There is also a solar driven exhaust vent located on the top rear. This vent keeps air moving through the trailer to prevent moisture buildup. The solar panel is an ICP brand, and I think it charges at a bit less than half an amp. Also in the trailer: steel pins and a small sledge hammer for tie downs if in an area that doesn’t have them. Included is a spare tire and tube for both the main and tail wheel. Also two good wing stands, a wing wheel and water ballast filling equipment.
As to the glider itself:
I forgot to look at the logs to see how many hours are on the glider. My partners and I are the third owners of the glider. I bought it from the guy who bought it from the original owner. It’s in annual and always has been. The annual is good until July of next year. There has been some damage history. I did some damage to a wing when I hit a small tree while landing out. The gear was also tweaked a bit on that landing. The repair work was done at a licensed facility in Williams, CA by Dean Aldinger (from whom I bought the glider. He is a glass artist) and Rex Mayes, owner of Willliams Soaring Center. There was also some minor damage when the gear collapsed on landing (not a gear up) by one of the partners. That repair was done by Rick Anderson of Yankee Composites in Lampson (near Clear Lake), CA. The glider received good repair and is in excellent airworthy condition. We have a canopy cover a heavier cover for outside.
Equipment in the glider:
The instrument pod was a custom fabrication by Dean Aldinger. Included are a Becker radio, Becker transponder, Cambridge GPS 25 nav system, Winter mechanical vario (along with the electric Cambridge one). There is a hot mount for an Ipaq 4700 unit on the panel. All instruments were in working order when I flew TAZ this summer. The oxygen bottle has a fresh hydro.
As to the parachute, one of the partners has expressed an interest in keeping it, so it might not be part of the sale.
The partners have discussed a sale and come to these conclusions.. We’ll continue to fly and enjoy the glider…. It’s in great condition and well rigged. Rather than go back and forth on an asking price, we’ve decided that we’d come up with a non-negotiable price that we’ll take. That price is $18 thousand net FOB Truckee , CA.
