This is a really nice PIK-20B. The paint and interior are both in good condition. Factory yellow paint (and as with all PIKs, it’s not gel coat), and it still looks great with no crazing. There are the usual small scratches on the bottoms of the wingtips and a few nicks on the leading edge from trailering and ground handling, but nothing significant.
960 hours total time. When I bought it in 2020, the canopy had a small crack running forward (maybe 2–3 inches) from the Mecaplex window. One of the canopy hinges was also loose, as was the gear door. I repaired the hinges and added a doubler to the crack; both have been solid since. You can still see the crack and doubler, but it’s down by the window and not really in your field of view. It shows up in some of the flight videos in my Google Photos album - link at the end.
Besides just regular maintenance, the cockpit and panel have been recently refurbished. I removed the old interior paint by sanding and refinished it with a gray urethane (two-part epoxy type, not rattle can). It looks great and has held up well. Panel is set up with what I think is the best bang-for-the-buck instrumentation: Pressure driven vario, ASI and altimeter, SN10B computer/vario, PowerFLARM, MicroAir Mode C transponder, and a Becker com radio with boom mic. The PowerFLARM has a Bluetooth adapter for XCSoar, so you can display traffic and wind data on your phone’s moving map. It also has a Mountain High EDS oxygen system. Nice canopy cover from ridge sewing. New tires and tubes installed. AD 84-15-07 has been complied with and is no longer recurring. AD 92-07-07 is complied with and recurs at 1277 hours.
The trailer is the standard PIK all-fiberglass tube style. Axle is in good shape. I recently replaced all the studs and repacked the wheel bearings. Lights work and the plug is in good condition. Comes with full tow-out gear: tail dolly, tow bar, and wing wheel. Also includes wing stands for assembly and a tool to help pull the spars together. There’s a small wood wedge mounted in the fuselage that helps hold the right wing spar in position. It’s a very easy glider to rig. I may also include an extra one-man wing rigger. A spare tire is mounted inside the front of the trailer. I really like how roomy the PIK trailers are. You have extra room up front to put stuff beyond just the glider's tow equipment. The trailer has an Arizona permanent plate and I have a title for it in my name. It tows perfect at 80mph plus - we wanna spend time flying, not driving! lol
It flies really well and performs great. I think PIKs are the best bang for the buck in gliders, especially since they don’t have the gel coat issues common with many German gliders. At 50 years old, the paint still looks perfect. Find a gel coat glider you can say that about :-) The 90-degree flaps are very effective and easy to get used to. They act a lot like spoilers, just with a bigger pitch change. Touchdown speed is very slow, and once you’re on the ground I roll the flaps off to keep better aileron control as you slow down. I’ve had some great flights in it, and it’s ready to go. Needs nothing. If I was closer to a glider field I'd keep it. Call, text or email. If you call, leave a message please - I get so many spam calls I often don't answer unknown numbers, but I'll call you right back.
