Precision Aviation PAI-700 Vertical Card Compass

General Description

Precision Aviation PAI-700 Vertical Card Compass - is designed to replace fluid–damped compasses. The dry magnetic compass design utilizes eddy current damping, providing a more inherently stable reading with reduced lead and lag. The vertical card compass easy–to–steer–by presentation overlays a fixed miniature airplane (lubber line) over the 360 degree rotating dial. This more natural presentation of directional information gives the heading reading at 12 o'clock off the nose of the airplane and presents all quadrants in their true relation to the line of flight. Precision Vertical Card Compass is self–contained, and requires no power except for lighting through a 14/28v light–bar.

Fits into a 57mm (2¼″) instrument hole.

Wings & Wheels typically stocks Northern Hemisphere PAI-700. Southern Hemisphere is a special order, please allow approximately 2 to 3 weeks delivery time. Mounts are sold separately.

Precision Aviation PAI-700 Compass price varies depending on selection above.

Yes, the PAI-700 Vertical Card Compass does satisfy the FAA requirement that each aircraft must have a magnetic compass.

Yes, the PAI-700 is magnet driven thus it is subject to lead and lag, however, these tendencies are greatly reduced due to the absence of pendulosity.

Yes, it is inherently stable due to the use of eddy current damping which is a natural phenomenon built into the basic design.

No, the magnet cannot be pulled out of the gimbal, due to the use of a jeweled limit pin, which allows the compass to be flown inverted. However, this myth concerning pulling the magnet out of the gimbal showed up sometime back in an article and was later propagated via the internet in an article titled "Our Ally, The Magnetic Compass".

The PAI-700 Vertical Card Compass is manufactured exclusively by Precision Aviation, Inc. under authorization by the U.S. Department of Transportation, Federal Aviation Administration, citing 14CFR-21 and TSO C7c Type 1 Directional Instrument, Non-Stabilized.
