This battery is K2's K2B12V10EB with the built in Protection Circuit Model (PCM). A “PCM” is a Protection Circuit Module, that in its very simplest form controls the upper and lower voltage cut off and has short circuit protection. K2's also include balancing. The left graph is the SLA and right is the LiFePO2 from a test we did in a Stemme on the ground at RNM. The LiFePO2 ran an extra hour and still going strong, while the SLA was below 11v. The radio was on ATIS, transponder under constant interogation, Garmin 496, Dynon D10A, and Ilec SN10B.
We have been using SLA batteries in our sailplanes for years. However they do not seem to last very long, their capacity dimensions quickly, plus they are heavy. By the end of the flight the radio is flashing low battery, you are trying to figure out what to turn off so you can keep your IGC logger going. The fix was install another battery; this adds weight, sometimes with Non-lifting weights this is an issue, space can be a serious problem, people using a 1970s bungee from the barograph tray behind your head, the list goes on why this may be a bad idea. Personally, I want the glider as light as possible and then be able to carry the weight in water. I also want the batteries to last my 8 hour flight and not worry about them.
