Info on ipaq 310 PNA Travel companion

FlyWithCE Navigator can record IGC type flight logs whenever flights are made automatically (in registered versions of Navigator* ). Flight files are saved in main memory if Navigator is registered to the iPaq device directly or to the SD or CF Card if Navigator is installed and registered to the memory card *.

Just check the box in Navigator settings to enable IGC File logging

It is recommended that Navigator is installed and registered to the memory card rather than in main memory of the PDA device since on the memory card, even if the PDA battery is allowed to go completely dead or should you need to replace or upgrade the PDA device with the program registered to the memory card Navigator will simply work without any additional settings or registration needed on the new device by simply installing the memory card (like an additional hard drive). If Navigator is installed in main memory then the PDA will have to be connected to the users PC via ActiveSync (Free downloadable software from HP also) with a PDA to PC cable or PDA Cradle connected to the PC with USB or Serial cable.

Files from Navigator on a PDA can also be written to an SD card or CF Card directly on the PDA by transferring files from memory to storage cards within the PDA.

Many new computers have SD Card reader/writer sockets built in, those that don't will all still have USB ports, only very old computers are without USB and still have serial connections. SD and CF Card reader/writer to USB adapters are also inexpensive, many times for under $10.00 and available from nearly any electronics and computer store or on-line suppliers as simply plug n' play devices.

With FlywithCE installed on the SD Memory card, or ever those that have this installed on CF Memory cards (typically just those using expansion sleeves on only 3600-3700 ipaq's) it is easy to update memory cards when new software update versions are offered, if you want to add or remove databases, or simply save and view flight logs with 2nd. party software like SeeYou, Strepla, LXe or IGC Flight Replay (some are FREE and available to download). The files saved with FlywithCE Navigator are identical to IGC files and let you review your flights with most flight viewing software and will let you replay flights in 3D as well as view save and print barograms, ground traces and statistics of flights.

Click on images to see examples of save and printer files
"click on imaged for flight traces and statistics
Flight files are saved automatically to Navigator's SD card every time a flight is made as long as Navigator is a registered version.

*Trial versions of Navigator allow you to do this only in the first 30 days after registration

User comment:
I use it and like it very much.  It does the job and is simple to use.  A major benefit when you're in new locations and need info at the ready. 1 Map Quality: I dont know too much about the WP maps, but the FlywithCE stuff works when needed. I dont use it regularly as my location is pretty flat.  Flat terrain maps are boring to look at.  Most of the time I leave the map off and use the waypoints only. 2 Lat/Long: have groundspeed displayed and tap it.  It will bring up a box displaying the Lat/Long, Track, Groundspeed, GPS Altitude, Nav Status, and number of satellites. 3 Airspace files: I had this problem as well in the beginning.  Turns out my airspace files were formatted bad.  I did a little checking and made sure the formats were ok, then double checked the airspace tab to enable the specific classes. Also nice that you can show the whole airspace colored or just the boundaries.  Also very interesting when the sectional is displayed and you can see any differences between the sectional airspace and the airspace files imported. Very eye opening in some places. 4 Marking Position: thermal positions are marked on the map screen showing location and rate of climb (or sink) automatically when flying. Better to find the position out the window and get a fix that way.  However, I have used this feature when re-entering the area after several hours and many miles have come and gone. Above all else, the ease of use is the best feature and the support from Uros is fantastic. The capability to have the program registered to an SD card is also very cool, gives you opportunity to try out different PDA's before you buy one (or if you need a better one eventually).

NEW NAV (sectional chart bitmap) Maps included
Updates FREE for current FlywithCE registered owners

Above: Bitmap @ 25 mile scale, BitMap @ 10 mile scale, with Bitmaps (sectional charts) you can select the option to have Navigator TEXT displayed over the map. Next displats in nthumbnail (click on to expenad) Elevation display (rather flat here) and Relative dispay
in addition to these options hide all maps.
Note also the green boxes with numbers, all airposrt within reach will show these boxes ad the altitude above glideslope you are to arrive there based on your glider polar, McCready setting, and your reserve altitude settings. Bitmaps are now available on http://www.flywithce.com/download_maps.html if you want them. Simply download the ZIP file to your desktop PC and extract the files. You then get 2 items. Now with the SD Card in your PC look in the SD Card and you'll find a folder called "Databases", simply Copy these Bitmap files (mouse right click, copy) from the desktop to this folder), you should see them transfer.....and you're done with adding them to the Navigator SD Card....Install the SD card in your iPaq.....run Navigator program.....in the folder "settings" go to "files".....there are drop down options at the bottom of the page....select the MAP file....there you should see the Bitmaps.....just highlight them and say OK to close this window. Next time you run Navigator you'll find these can be displayed by selecting them from the main display screen, (easiest way to change background in Navigator is select McCray and when this window is open you'll see at the bottom of the window "Bitmap" "Elevation" "Relative" or "None"  select which ever background you like, when you say OK it saves this map to the background.....sounds complicated but it is really very simple.

NEW
You can use unregistered (Basic) Navigator program as a simple moving map application. That's right.....it is FREE, No charge just simply download to your pocket PC and see how simple Navigator is to use.
Again, other soaring software vendors only offer a simplified simulator version or a trial version with annoying pop-ups that tell you that you must buy to continue using on their trail versions

flyWithCE

1. The program is easy to use
Navigator is a full featured glider navigation program. On the map you can see waypoints, airspaces and selected task. As a background you can use elevation, differential and bitmap (raster) map.
It also calculates and displays useful information about the final glide, speed and direction of wind and speed to fly. On the second window thermal statistics are displayed.
2. Memory card installation
With version  you can easily transfer Navigator from main memory to memory card (usually SD or Compact Flash memory card). This will preserve main memory space and all your files together with program, settings and recorded flights will be stored on one memory card.   To install the program from memory card you just have to plug in the memory card and Navigator menu option will be added to the Start - Programs - flyWithCE menu. Use this shortcut to run Navigator program from memory card.

Register Navigator to memory card
Some pilots are using Pocket PC exclusively for flying and after long winter they find out that because of the empty battery all the programs and databases were lost. Memory card installation will prevent that. All programs, databases and settings will be preserved and you will just have to recharge the Pocket PC battery
New registration codes are displayed In Register dialog when you have memory card inserted. Use this code while ordering Navigator and registration key will be tied to the memory card. This means that Navigator will work if you have this memory card inserted in Pocket PC. This feature is working on Pocket PC devices with operating system version Windows Mobile 2003 or newer.
Order Navigator on memory card
New navigator will enable you to register program to memory card. This will enable easy device upgrade, where you will just unplug the memory card from the old device and insert it into the new device.
Memory card options are available only to registered users.
You can now order flyWithCE Navigator on the memory card. Navigator will be preinstalled and registered. You will only have to add your database files you are ready to fly.
3. Import settings and competitive upgrade
Import settings from Glide Navigator II

Glide Navigator II users can now easily upgrade their program to flyWithCE Navigator. After installing the Navigator use Import setting function, which is located in the Installation dialog window on the Defaults tab. This option will help you import most of the settings. Program will also use the same database files that are selected in Glide Navigator II.

With Navigator there are no hidden costs

There is no yearly fee to get new updates. Upgrade policy has been reviewed,
the upgrade to 3.10 from all previous versions will be also free of charge.

5. Simulator mode - Center position
Every pilot should learn to use the new software before take off. Because of that simulator is useful tool. In the past the initial position was determined by the contents of the waypoint database. Stat position was in the center of the waypoint database. In new version of Navigator user enter start position manually. By doing so, every simulation will start at that position.

simple on screen Map-on, Map-off allows you to see terrain maps
or simply turn them off to reduce display clutter

Thermal statistics and height above terrain added to the second  "parameter window."
Last 4 lifts are displayed on the screen together with the average lift value for those 4 lifts. You can use this value as the MC setting.  Last 10 lifts are also displayed on the map together with the lift average. On the map they are displayed as blue arrow and the number beside the symbol is the average vario value for that lift.

 Navigator safety features

 User interface design

The first and one of the most important safety features is user interface design. All controls should be big enough so that they would be easily accessible in the air. Standard components like menu bar are not appropriate and because Navigator user interface design is different than one in standard Pocket PC devices.

 Final glide calculation

Final glide calculator uses polar data, wind information, MC setting, terrain information and reserve altitude to calculate required altitude and glide ratio to reach selected waypoint. Glide ratio is better information when flying long final glides. Collision point and required glide ratio are also displayed on moving map screen.

Emergency function in waypoint select window

When user selects emergency option Navigator changes filter to display only airports and landing points. All waypoints are sorted by distance. By doing it is easy to select the most appropriate landing site. Pilot can than just select this landing site and press Select button.

 Altitude alarm

When flying height correct use of the oxygen equipment. Navigator will remind you when you will cross the upper altitude limit. Than you can decide if you would like to turn of the alarm or if Navigator should remind you again in 2 minutes time. The time above the maximum altitude is also displayed.

 Auto scale function

To minimize the number of interactions with the program the auto scale functions becomes very handy. Program will change the scale so that the target waypoint will be always displayed on the map.

 Assign shortcuts to hardware keys

To quickly access programs function, user can redefine the functions of the standard Pocket PC hardware keys. Usually keys are easily and they give better mechanical feedback when they are pressed. Most frequently used action should be assigned to 4 program and cursor keys.

 Airspace detector with airspace alarms

This feature becomes very important when flying around bigger airports where airspace restrictions are important. Navigator will alert pilot when he or she will fly close to airspace. All close airspaces are also displayed in Airspace detector screen, where information about closest airspaces is displayed.

 Two final glide information displayed

When flying tasks it is nice to have the backup waypoint displayed separately. Navigator can display final glide information to selected waypoint and to next waypoint in task. This options enables pilot to select another waypoint and track final glide information to backup airport.

 Color coding (background color)

Color sometimes tells more than numbers and the quick look to the Pocket PC where background is green or red tells you enough to know if you can reach selected waypoint or not.

 Terrain elevation graph

Pilot can observe the profile of the terrain and than decide if it is safe to fly to selected waypoint. Safety altitude of 100 m is always used to calculate the final glide over terrain, but in mountains pilot should evaluate the terrain ahead and decide if it is safe to continue the flight in that direction (or with that altitude).

 Moving map

User can change the altitude to differential mode and then all terrain that is higher than current altitude is colored red. This option is interesting when you are flying over the mountain terrain.

let's you display your flights, barograms and statistics directly on you Pocket PC
From version 2.00 program Analyze can be installed to the memory card. Now you can install the Analyze program together with Navigator on the same Memory card.
The procedure is the same as for the Navigator. Please check the Navigator Memory Card installation section.

With program Analyze you can view flight recordings in IGC format. It is written for Pocket PC devices (OS version 3.00 or higher). Program will run on devices with ARM and MIPS microprocessors.

Order direct from FlyWithCE

Main menu After you load the IGC file (File - Open... option) you can navigate to different pages to check your flight. For quick navigation between pages you can also use the arrow keys on the menu bar. Program will circle between pages (map page is an exception). By pressing the button in the middle of the arrow buttons, you will return to the Main menu.File info Here you can check all information that is written in the IGC file header. Most interesting would be information about the pilot, plane and flight recorder, which was used to record this flight.

Statistics Basic flight statistics are displayed here. UTC time is used to display the take off and landing time.

Select task On this screen you can disable the task declared in the flight recorder. Task statistics will not be displayed and also task will not be plotted on the map. This is useful feature if you were not flying the declared task.

Task statistics Analyze will check the task and display the basic statistics: - task length - task duration (if completed)- average task speed (if completed)- position of each waypoint- distance and course between waypoints- time and altitude at which the waypoint was turned- average leg speed. Sector settings (defined in Settings - Sectors tab) are used to check the task.

Map On map display you can check the flight path. If you select the task, than it will be plotted on the map. Waypoint, airspaces and elevation map will be displayed if you select appropriate file in the Settings dialog windows - Files tab. The list of supported files is the same as for the Navigator program. You can zoom in by dragging the pen on the map. The other option is to select the predefined zoom by selecting the icon in the top right corner. One of the predefined zoom values is also Flight, which will change zoom value to display whole flight. You can change the Zoom to Pan mode by taping on the icon in the top left corner. Now when you will drag the pen across the screen, program will change the map position (and maintain the zoom value).

Barogram You can change the scale of the barogram by changing the setting in the combo box in the top right corner. On the barogram the ENL parameter value is displayed (if recorded in the IGC file) and also the position of the waypoints. UTC time is displayed.

Settings Settings are similar as in the Navigator program. Most values are shared between the programs. So if you are using the Navigator than most likely you do not have to change anything.

DownLoader
Pocket PC with DownLoader program is perfect replacement for quite big and usually very expensive notebooks, which displays are usually poorly visible under direct sunlight. After download you can check flights with Analyze. At home you can transfer flights from Pocket PC to your desktop computer where you have other flight analysis software.  Download flights directly to your Pocket PC device with program DownLoader. Flights are written in device memory in manufacturers and in IGC file format. With program you can also upload and download waypoint and task file and change IGC flight recorder settings.
